Aluminum cans are the second leading beverage container type due to their widespread use in the massive soft drink and beer markets. Lightweight and non-breakable, cans come in varying heights and diameters. The U. S has historically used aluminum beverage containers with a diameter slightly in excess of 65mm. European countries generally use a much narrower size of 52mm for soft drinks and some beers. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to keep a 100-watt bulb burning for nearly four hours. The recycling rate for aluminum helps reduce the energy used to produce it by nearly 50 percent. The typical can comprises over 40 percent of recycled aluminum.
